Gabriel Maizan

A versatile musician and classically trained clarinetist, he combines a solid classical background with a strong openness to contemporary styles, jazz, and improvisation.

He began his musical training in 2015 at the “Giuseppe Tartini” Conservatory in Trieste, under the guidance of Maestro Domenico Foschini. Over the years, he has refined his technique and interpretive sensitivity by participating in numerous clarinet masterclasses led by internationally renowned masters—including Calogero Palermo, Petar Garic, Rauno Tikkanen, Rocco Parisi, Nikolai Pfeffer, Paolo Beltramini, and Nicola Bulfone—and by delving into the repertoire for the historical clarinet with Rocco Carbonara. He also studied chamber music with Emanuela Piemonti and Sergio Lamberto, musical interpretation with Jan van der Roost, and advanced his studies at the Italian Clarinet Academy under the guidance of Piero Vincenti. His artistic curiosity has led him to explore modern musical languages, jazz, and non-jazz improvisation through workshops and masterclasses with leading figures such as François Houle, Nick Fraser, Roberto Dani, Ares Tavolazzi, Mauro Ottolini, Greg Osby, and Daniele D’Agaro.

His orchestral and concert activities are rich and varied: he has collaborated with the “Giuseppe Verdi” Opera House in Trieste as principal clarinetist of the stage band and as a member of the Philharmonic. At the Tartini Conservatory, he performed with the Symphony Orchestra, the Wind Orchestra, and the Jazz Orchestra, distinguishing himself as a soloist in numerous concerts and at the Sarteano Jazz Festival, in addition to serving as principal clarinetist in the world premiere of Karl Weigl’s opera *Il Pifferaio di Hamelin *.

From an institutional and regional perspective, he is a permanent member of the “Giuseppe Verdi” Civic Wind Orchestra City of Trieste, with which he regularly performs in smaller ensembles at prestigious events, such as the Guitar Festival (alongside concert artists such as Vito Nicola Paradiso and Pierluigi Corona) and the conducting masterclasses led by Maestro Andrea Loss. He also collaborates on a regular basis with various orchestras and bands in the region—including the Arcobaleno Wind Orchestra, the Muggia City Band, and the Santa Barbara Philharmonic—performing on stages throughout Northern Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, and Austria.

Very active in contemporary music, he is a member of the Ect Ensemble, with which he has performed at the “Trieste Prima” festival and the “Teatri del Suono” series. In the realm of modern and experimental genres, he was a member of the group “The Jazz Dealers” and is a co-founder of the “Tega-Tega Afrobic” project, an Afrobeat ensemble that has headlined acclaimed live performances as part of the “Trieste Estate” festival and the “Estensioni Jazz Club Diffuso” season.
